Tom Kersey, composer
Tom Kersey composes art music which incorporates elements of classical, rock, jazz, avant-garde, improvisation, and folk music from around the world. He has composed works for orchestra, string quartet, solo cello, electronics, and a variety of chamber ensembles including augmentations of standard rock band instrumentation. Tom has had works performed by the Florida Orchestra, and his composition for piano trio called Soiree was performed at Symphony Space in New York City as part of the American Composers's Alliance Festival of American Music. As an undergraduate student at the University of South Florida, Tom befriended the late composer and pianist Robert Helps, and formally studied composition with James Lewis, Hilton Jones, Paul Reller, and Michael Timpson. Recognized as one of the top composition students at his university, Tom had two pieces played by the Florida Orchestra, received scholarships for his composition work, was nominated by the music faculty to receive an award recognizing work that integrated various artistic disciplines, and was invited by the dean of the school of music to perform "Potential Energy", one of his compositions for solo cello for a college of visual and performing arts graduation ceremony. In addition to purely acoustic music, Tom has created electronic works, collaborated with dancers, and produced large-scale graphic scores.
